History & Culture
If you are interested in culture, history and in traces of the past, Gotland is the right place to come. Gotland is renowned for its rich history and its genuine, distinctive culture.
Our guides help you find the most interesting locations as well as the right mix of excitement and relaxation.
Below are some examples of what Gotland Guide & Cruise Service can offer you. There are many more options, contact us to learn more.
Visby City Walk (c. 2 hrs)
The city centre of Visby has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995. There is plenty to look at and listen to here – almost every old house, ruin and place has its own tale or legend. During this walk, you will see the most interesting places in the city and listen to many fantastic and enthralling stories.
Gotland Historic Museum (c. 1 hr)
The city walk may be completed with a visit to Gotlands Fornsal (Gotland Historic Museum). Our guide will help you find your way among Viking Age picture stones and ancient gold and silver treasures.
City Walk, Trip to Lummelunda Cave
Many choose to complement the city walk with a trip to the exciting Lummelunda Cave, about 15 kilometres (c. 9 miles) north of Visby. Among the stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave it is cool; about 8 degrees Celcius (46° Farenheit) even in summer, so remember to bring warm clothing.
Nature on Gotland
Gotland’s distinctive scenery is both exotic and exciting. The island was formed entirely from limestone deposits created 400 million years ago when Gotland was a tropical coral reef at the Equator.
Gotland is very rich in fossils and the limestone has created the conditions for a very special flora and fauna. Many species can only be found here. The mild climate favours unusual plants and the bird life is spectacular.
Nature Walk, Södra Hällarna (South Cliffs) in Visby
(c. 3.5 hrs)
Gotland Guide & Cruise Service leads the way and tells of the inspiring scenery in Visby’s vicinity. The walk goes along Södra Hällarna (the South Cliffs) to the waterfall. From there, we descend to the lower cliff edge, where the walk continues south. On the beach, we look for fossils and walk onwards to the ”rain forest” by Kneipbyn.
Orchid Trip (whole day)
Gotland is famous for its many orchid spieces and the abundance of orchids all over the island. The flowering season begins in April-May and the varieties succeed one another during spring and summer. At Gotland Guide & Cruise Service, we know where to find these rarities, and we offer an Orchid Trip with one of our botanically learned guides.
